This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join Barnardo’s as Project Workers at the Nation Service, Barnardo’s Cymru Western Bay Locality to support children and young people. The role will be working predominantly in Swansea

What is the Nation Service?

The Nation is a centrally based service which provides a range of support functions (including some statutory functions) which safeguard and improve the well-being of vulnerable young people including:

Provision of Social Workers (Local Authority) to case manage young people who are Children In Need of Care and Support and those at risk of harm, Looked After Children or Care Leavers.
Provision of Personal Advisors (Barnardo’s) to support young people who are Looked After Children or Care Leavers.
The assessment and support of young people aged 17 to 21 who present as homeless or at risk of homelessness (Barnardo’s).
A supported lodgings scheme (Barnardo’s).
The Education Link service providing PSE workshops to pupils in Years 10-13 (Barnardo’s) You will undertake direct, planned and structured one to one and group sessions with young people referred to the service. Working toward distinct outcomes you will support young people to reach their person-centred goals in a trauma-informed way.
The key elements of direct support includes:

Group work provision promoting independent living skills to young people who are in foster care or residential care (aged 15-16) in preparation for their ‘move on’ housing options. This will include delivering accredited Independent Living Skills programmes, facilitating visits to accommodation providers as well as providing opportunities to develop practical skills such as cooking, budgeting, cleaning and bill paying in a home environment
Support for those at risk of homelessness or those at risk of placement breakdown, for young people aged 16+. This is targeted one-to-one support for those young people and their carers who may be experiencing instability in their accommodation or placement due to a desire to live independently
This service will provide young people aged 16+ with an independent living experience in order for them to better understand their accommodation needs and options. Intensive individual support will be provided to those young people accessing the training flats (includes evening and weekend working)
What will the job involve?

As the Project Worker you would provide advice, guidance and support through direct work with children and young people in accordance with the aims and objectives of the service. Your duties will include:

Working with young people and professionals to develop agreed support plans.
Delivering accredited group work programmes in the areas of Independent living and tenancy readiness.
Visiting and supporting service users in their placements providing support to young people and their carers.
Visiting the young people accessing the training flats on a regular, planned basis. Undertaking entry/exit tasks, safety and welfare checks as well as responding to emergencies and crises that may arise within service hours.
Supporting young people to ensure they are aware of their accommodation options and entitlements in readiness for move on. This will include assisting young people to complete benefit applications, offering support through appeals as well as supporting service administrators with the monitoring data.
Supporting young people to integrate into their communities and to encourage participation in community events and activities.
Tracking a young person’s support journey through the use of outcomes scoring. To discuss, score and record outcomes, implementing a young person-centred approach.
What are we looking for?

You will have (essential criteria):

Knowledge of issues affecting vulnerable young people who may be care experienced and have faced adversity throughout their childhood and the systems which impact upon their lives (health, benefits, education, employment, housing).
Experience of direct face to face work with vulnerable young people and their families.
Experience of safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults.
Experience in designing and implementing individual programmes of work with vulnerable young people demonstrating positive outcomes as a result of the work.
Experience of facilitating group based sessions such as issue-based workshops and independent living skills programmes
Knowledge of welfare benefits, Housing and Social Care legislation
Additional Information:

You must demonstrate in your application that you currently use the skills outlined below, and in the Job Description/Person Specifications, or have used them previously in employment, education, training, volunteering etc.

This post is fixed term and subject to funding until 31st March 2021. We are willing to consider secondment applications from partner agencies linked with the Nation Service.

This service provides support to young people from 9am until 10pm Monday to Friday and from 10am until 6pm on weekends. You will be required to work outside of normal business hours, including at weekends and public holidays. No additional renumeration is payable for work outside of normal business hours. Your main office base will be at Children Matter, Swansea, Penlan but you will be expected to work locally and within Nation Service, Swansea. Please see below example of rota:
