Role Purpose

Lead the EMEA Sector R&D Packaging Development team, to make Packaging a competitive advantage. Key focus areas are packaging innovation, sustainability and capability building.

Working with the Product Development, Marketing and Design teams to lead packaging development and implementation activities working with Global, EMEA and local teams.

Lead Packaging Development, Technologist and Front End Innovation (FEI) teams to ideate, develop & implement packaging initiatives across the region whilst establishing best practice & developing strong connections.

Nature & Scope of role:

  • Reports to the “EMEA Sector Leader – Family Care” and has responsibility for leading, developing and supporting packaging engineering solutions to build a compelling strategy that delivers the technology roadmap, in collaboration with vendors and mills.

  • Will provide thought leadership as well as technical leadership for all EMEA brands and Manufacturing sites, coordinating multifunctional teams including R&D, Product Supply and Procurement where necessary on key technical lead innovations and projects.

  • Is a pan-EMEA role, covering all consumer business sectors (Family Care, Baby Care and Adult & Fem Care) and requires working within multiple diverse cultures.

  • Capital Budget in the range of $1 million to $10 million.

  • Research budgets for trials up to $0.5million.

Principle accountabilities:

  • Leads by example, ensuring compliance with company and country regulations.

  • Recruit and build capability of talent to create a world class packaging team

  • Responsible for the vision and strategy for the EMEA Packaging Team. Responsible for the right operating structure, size & capability of organisation to reflect business needs, if necessary, boost capacity using external resources.

  • Provides thought leadership on packaging sustainability to make K-C EMEA a global leader on environmentally friendly solutions in order to achieve K-Cs 2030 Sustainability Goals (e.g. virgin plastic reduction of 50%). Builds the right strategy, structure, process and interactions to deliver on these commitments.

  • Works with the newly created FEI team to deliver packaging solutions that delight consumers and provide a competitive advantage.

  • Lead & participate in EMEA/Global Design packaging strategy and development programmes to meet EMEA’s business needs. Investigate new materials, formats and vendors to assist in the development of new innovations and package improvement, and suppliers

  • Participate in & lead consumer studies to feed pack design and packaging structure options.

  • Lead team providing technical support for current packaging formats, their optimization as well as the development of packaging materials / structures / vendors / standardization of processes & tools that improve efficiencies and reduce potential risks / errors.

  • Lead & participate commercialisation of packaging innovations and projects across EMEA ensuring the manufacturing has capability to implement new pack formats and designs. Support commercialisation of product innovations. Champion colour printing standard processes with pre-press and printer and suppliers.

  • Actively participate in the Innovation Management Framework (IMF) Governance Process to ensure the timely approval & accomplishment of packaging development activities.

  • Own the packaging specification database and Safety Clearance process for packaging materials in the region.

  • Recommend & support packaging efficiency and material cost optimisation programmes.

  • Promote strong relationships between Research & Engineering & local Packaging Technologists, Purchasing, Engineering, Product Supply, KCI/Global NW, Marketing, Supply chain, Quality, Design. Develop and share best practices in packaging processes between the mills supported by local Packaging Technologists. Link strategies, materials & manufacturing to deliver brand driven packaging solutions, efficiently, cost effectively

  • Establishes and maintains a work environment where continuous improvement is expected, and maintaining the status quo is challenged.

  • Ensures control of project costs. Contributes to cost savings initiatives in all areas.

  • Ensures compliance with all relevant Corporate Financial Instructions and the K-C Code of Conduct.

  • Works to achieve the corporate vision for environmental responsibility, in compliance with all the applicable laws and regulations. Foster KC Intellectual Property.

  • Establish 2D and 3D regional prototyping capability

Qualifications and experience:

  • Science/engineering/packaging qualifications typically to bachelor’s degree or above.

  • Broad knowledge of innovative packaging development, packaging materials and packaging equipment site assets.

  • Proven track record leading a development team in complex and dynamic environments.

  • Proven experience of developing business strategy for packaging innovation

  • Organizational agility and entrepreneurial mindset are a must.

  • Experience of leading sustainability initiatives

  • Ideally a second European language.
